Hottest Canary Islands in September

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

As summer draws to a close, the Canary Islands remain hot and sunny. With the end of the school holidays, holidays are cheaper and the resorts will be quieter.

Lanzarote is the hottest island in September, but the other islands receive more hours of sunshine per day. In truth, the difference in temperature isn’t too noticeable at this time of year and all the islands are warm enough for swimming and sunbathing.

  • London

Average maximum temperature: 19ºC
Average minimum temperature: 11ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 5

  • Gran Canaria

Average maximum temperature: 26ºC
Average minimum temperature: 20ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8

Recommended holidays: there’s a lot more to Gran Canaria than its 40 miles of beaches, with a beautiful volcanic interior, mountains and traditional villages. It’s a great destination for foodies too – the island grows its own coffee and produces its own rum. See a pick of the best places to stay along with some stylish boutique hotels. You could discover the island’s canyons and coastline on an independent walking holiday.

  • Lanzarote

Average maximum temperature: 28ºC
Average minimum temperature: 20ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 7

Recommended holidays: perhaps the prettiest of the Canaries, Lanzarote is a biosphere reserve island known for its volcanoes, lava fields, red earth and whitewashed houses. There are some quiet resorts and lovely boutique hotels in Lanzarote, or you could rent a villa with private pool. If you’re travelling with young children, take a look at the Princess Yaiza Resort.

  • Fuerteventura

Average maximum temperature: 27ºC
Average minimum temperature: 20ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8

Recommended holidays: Fuerteventura is known for its sandy beaches, turquoise seas and constant breezes. In fact, it’s a magnet for surfers and windsurfers which has given the island something of a chilled and youthful vibe. Nevertheless, there are some lovely traditional villages and resorts, and some good-value places to stay. One way to explore the island is on an independent walking holiday.

  • Tenerife

Average maximum temperature: 25ºC
Average minimum temperature: 18ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8

Recommended holidays: the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has the best flight connections from across the UK, and some of the liveliest resorts. If you don’t fancy clubbing until the early hours, check out these luxury hotels   including the family-friendly Ritz-Carlton, Abama. For local colour and low-key charm, see this collection of boutique hotels in Tenerife. September sees the four-day end-of-summer carnival held at Puerto de la Cruz, a smaller version of the famous Lent carnival with some 15,000 people taking part.
