Hottest Canary Islands in May

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

The UK may be warming up in May but it can’t compete with the nine hours of daily sunshine found in the Canary Islands. Stock up on suncream, you’ll need it!

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the hottest islands in May, with practically no rain predicted. However, the sea will be slightly warmer in Tenerife and Gran Canaria if you are planning to spend time on the beach.

  • London

Average maximum temperature: 17ºC
Average minimum temperature: 8ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 6

  • Gran Canaria

Average maximum temperature: 22ºC
Average minimum temperature: 16ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

It would be a shame to go to Gran Canaria and see only its (admittedly beautiful) beaches because the rugged volcanic interior is crying out to be explored. Find the best places to stay in Gran Canaria plus an inspiring selection of boutique hotels.  One way to explore the island’s dramatic interior and coastline is on this self-guided walking holiday.

  • Lanzarote

Average maximum temperature: 23ºC
Average minimum temperature: 15ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

Lanzarote is one of the prettiest Canary Islands with low-key resorts, sandy beaches and dramatic volcanic landscapes. One of the best options is to rent a villa with private pool though families with young children swear by the Princess Yaiza Resort. Away from the busy resorts, you’ll find some gorgeous boutique hotels. It’s also a great time of year for a walking holiday.

  • Fuerteventura

Average maximum temperature: 23ºC
Average minimum temperature: 15ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

The original Canary Island continues to surprise and amaze with its dazzling white-sand beaches and turquoise seas. It’s also hugely popular with surfers and windsurfers. Check out the best places to stay in Fuerteventura. You could also opt for an independent walking holiday.

  • Tenerife

Average maximum temperature: 21ºC
Average minimum temperature: 14ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

Couples should check out these luxury hotels in Tenerife with Classic Collection. For families, we suggest The Ritz-Carlton, Abama or the Sheraton La Caleta. If you want something with charm and character, see these boutique hotels in Tenerife.
