Gourmet California

Mike & Donna's verdict:

We’ve driven the California coast many times and never tire of its variety. Sonoma is the antithesis of big and brash - a charming county packed with superb places to stay and vineyards tended by real enthusiasts. Wine-tasting, gourmet meals, the odd spa treatment and a final two days on the coast - heaven.

Napa Valley may be more famous but we love California’s Sonoma County – it scores off the scale for quaint villages, rolling vineyards, warm hospitality and culinary excellence.

We’ve crafted an indulgent week’s gourmet holiday which showcases Sonoma’s unique appeal and will tickle your taste buds.

Your week starts with a night in San Francisco, staying at the gracious St Regis in the heart of the city.

Pick up your car (we can arrange a convertible if you like to have the wind in your hair) and head over Golden Gate Bridge for two nights in the Fairmont Sonoma Mission. We’ll arrange a cookery class, wine tasting and wine pairing experience and you can enjoy dinner in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant.

Next stop is The Farmhouse Inn, a characterful boutique hotel heavy on charm and big on gourmet experiences, not least dinner in the Michelin-starred farm-to-table restaurant and wine-tasting programme. There’s also an option to enjoy a hot air balloon ride.

Your final two nights are on the coast, staying at the Bodega Bay Hotel. Indulge in the hotel’s complimentary wine hour each evening, with cheese and crackers, and breath in that ocean spray. It’s the perfect finale to your week of California’s finest food, wine and hospitality.

This is the perfect fly-drive holiday for those who don’t like to drive long distances! Nowhere is more than an hour’s drive as you move from hotel to hotel – all the more time to enjoy the fruits of the land.
