South Hams

We say
The South Hams is Devon at its most idyllic. Boat trips and sandcastles, surfing and rock pooling, dangling crab lines off the harbour wall - it's the simple pleasures that make holidays here such a guaranteed hit. These self-catering cottages allow you to make the most of the area, including day trips to Dartmoor National Park where you can ride ponies and climb the tors.

It boasts the best sandy beaches – including Bigbury Beach, Bantham Beach and Blackpool Sands – and charming towns such as Salcombe, Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, which are packed with great places to eat, drink, and shop. Running from Torbay to Plymouth, the South Hams also borders Dartmoor National Park and two national nature reserves where you can try tor-climbing, pony trekking, cycling and kite-flying.

All the family will enjoy a visit to the Woodlands Family Theme Park and a trip on the South Devon Railway steam train along the River Dart. You can also take a day trip across to Burgh Island.

Close to Bigbury on Sea, Cobbles Point is a characterful and spacious family home with an enclosed garden, sleeping up to eight. With two bedrooms, charming Little Scypen is located on the edge of a lovely seaside village and has an exceptionally pretty garden.

Larger family groups will love the wide open spaces and access to a shared indoor heated pool and games room at Swallows Reach, set in a working farm.

If a waterfront setting is your thing, you can’t beat Sandridge Boathouse, a two-bedroom converted 18th century bathing house on the River Dart.

When The Sunday Times’ Stephen Bleach stayed at one of our properties, he wrote: “Renting a property through Helpful is like having it chosen by a like-minded friend.” We couldn’t put it better ourselves!
