Wildlife holidays

Our verdict:

Birds, bears, butterflies: wildlife holidays are as diverse as the people you’ll find on them. From elusive brown bears in Finland to rare lemurs in Madagascar, one constant on Explore’s trips is an expert guide. Join a small group of like-minded adventurers for an itinerary packed with exciting encounters.

Explore says

Travel with us to experience some of the world’s most exciting and elusive wildlife encounters. With expert local guides and a large proportion of clients travelling alone, we offer intimate group trips where you’ll meet other humans as well as more exotic species.

  • expert-guided groups
  • popular with solos
  • wide range of destinations

We have more than 36 years’ experience of organising intrepid group trips, tailor-made travel and self-guided walking and cycling holidays around the globe, and we now offer more than 550 trips in 120 countries.

Our groups tend to consist of 10 to 16 people, with an average age of 53. Around 40% of clients on our small group trips travel alone – we offer a free room share option, matching up solo travellers with a fellow explorer of the same gender, or you can pay a supplement for a single room. Here’s a small selection of our many wildlife tours.

If time is short, you could head to northern Finland on a Brown Bear Weekend between May and September. Over three nights, staying in simple lodges and huts, you’ll have a chance to view Arctic hares, wolves and wolverines, as well as brown bears.

On our Tribes and Wildlife of Gujarat trip to north west India, our goal is to see wild Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park – their only remaining habitat in the world. Other highlights include the Jain temples of Bhanavgar, Jamnagar Marine National Park and Mumbai’s Dharavi, the “Slumdog Millionaire” quarter.

Sloths, monkeys, tree frogs, crocodiles, coatimundi and spectacular birdlife are highlights of Costa Rica. Immerse yourself in the flora and fauna of this incredible Central American on one of our most popular trips, Highlights of Costa Rica.

Go deep into Africa exploring the dramatic scenery of the Kwa Zulu Natal on this 4X4 Wildlife Safari of South Africa and Swaziland. It includes the Kruger National Park for a chance to see the Big Five, along with Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park – home to Africa’s largest rhino population – and the secluded Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary, and the St Lucia wetlands in Swaziland for hippo and crocodile.

A visit to the outstanding Cheetah Conservation Foundation is a highlight of our Namibia Lodge Safari  where you’ll also track elephants, rhinos and lions through the Etosha and Waterberg Plateau National Parks.

Or how about Madagascar, an island teeming with wildlife, much of it unique? Lemurs, chameleons, colourful amphibians and remarkable birdlife await on this incredible adventure.
