Destination of the month: Crete
With temperatures in the mid to high 20s during September and October, the Greek island of Crete makes the perfect escape if you’re looking for sun. Only a short-haul flight away, it’s also a great time to make the most of the island’s attractions before they close for the winter, without the crowds of summer.
The palace of Knossos is one of the best known, but the Venetian harbour and old town of Chania are beautiful to stroll around, along with the White mountains, stunning beaches, the lagoon at Balos Beach and the unusual history of former leper island, Spinalonga.
Check in to the Mistral Hotel where all guests stay solo. It offers activities and excursions, delicious food cooked from local ingredients plus two swimming pools and a beach within three minutes walk.
Editor’s choice: Age of Victoria
Celebrating the bicentenary of Queen Victoria’s birth next year, Martin Randall Travel has a special symposia weekend taking place in February. The two-night event from 8-10 February will take place at the Castle Hotel in Taunton, Somerset, with 14 40-minute talks, Q&A sessions and a panel discussion with historians speaking on Victorian art, technology, literature, politics and society. Priced £760, it includes two dinners with wine, refreshments and drinks reception, all talks, and B&B accommodation with no single supplement.
* We usually quote prices from London airports, but often other departure airports are available. Ask the tour operator for details.
