Our verdict:

From adventure capital Queenstown to stunning scenery like the Bay of Islands, small group tours are one of the best ways for solos to see New Zealand’s highlights. With itineraries for the North and South Islands, you’re guaranteed a great mix of adventure, travelling companions with a similar outlook and local knowledge.

Intrepid Travel says

Our small group adventures worldwide attract a significant percentage of solo travellers of all ages – most are between 25-45 years but there’s no age limit. All share a passion for travel, discovery and adventure – and the camaraderie that comes from travelling in a small group (our average group size is just 10 people).

All our trips are led by expert local guides, all of whom not only know their home turf inside out but also have the professionalism, personality and enthusiasm to make a good holiday great for everyone. We use local transport and locally-owned accommodation wherever possible, plus camping on a number of itineraries – it’s all about getting under the skin of a place with an adventurous spirit.

Our New Zealand itineraries range from 11 to 22 days with options in the North and South Islands – or both.

The most popular option is the 22-day New Zealand Explorer which immerses you in pretty much all that New Zealand has to offer – choose from north- or south-bound itineraries. Amongst the many experiences across both islands are the Franz Josef Glacier, the Bay of Islands, Queenstown (the adventure capital), Rotorua, Mount Cook, a cruise on Doubtful Sound, whale-watching in Kaikoura and the glow-worms of Waitomo.

If you have less time available, we offer 11-day trips on South Island and a 12-day adventure on North Island.

Accommodation on all our New Zealand trips is in a range of comfortable lodges. Lots of activities are included in the price and there is also a wide range of options for additional experiences from a helicopter trip to the Franz Josef Glacier to horse-riding, river-tubing and bungee jumping.

For solo travellers, we include twin share accommodation with another group member of the same sex. On some trips, you can opt to pay a single supplement.
