Cathy's verdict
Madeira’s year-round sunshine makes it a tempting escape, especially for keen walkers and nature-lovers. And with no single supplement in a wide selection of hotels year-round, Mercury Holidays gives another incentive to book, along with whale-watching, the old town of Funchal, and a friendly atmosphere without enforced socialising.

Mercury Holidays says

Boasting year-round sunshine, a friendly atmosphere, a wide range of places to see and things to do, Madeira is one of our most popular destinations. It offers exceptional value for money too, with consistently high standards of hospitality in its hotels and restaurants.

  • no single supplement
  • your own double room
  • singles tables for dinner

We offer a wide range of hotels on the island with a number of no single supplement deals so you can enjoy the privacy of your own double room for solo occupancy at no extra cost. Our local hosts are also on hand and will arrange grouped singles tables at mealtimes.

The Vidamar Resorts Madeira is a contemporary five star hotel on the west side of Funchal. It’s got stupendous sea views – and, a rarity in Madeira, direct access in to the sea – as well as indoor and outdoor pools, the Mar Sea Spa Thalasso centre and discounted rates at local golf clubs. Dining is a treat here and there’s a dine-around option so you can experience local restaurants too.

Also in Funchal, the Dorisol Mimosa Aparthotel offers hotel services with the option to self-cater if you fancy it – each studio suite comes with a kitchenette.

Canico Bay is a thriving little resort not far from Funchal. Home to a number of hotels, we have negotiated no single supplement at three properties here, with some dine around options and a shuttle bus service available for trips in to Funchal. Choose from the Royal Orchid, with its fabulous waterfront setting, Cais da Oliveira and Four Views Oasis.

Out and about, you won’t want to miss a wander around charming Funchal where highlights include the old town, Botanical Garden, the Se Cathedral and covered farmers’ market.

From gentle strolls to strenuous hiking, walkers of all ages and abilities can easily enjoy some of the finest countryside and flora in the world. There’s climbing, scuba-diving, horse-riding, golf, surfing, deep-sea fishing and boat rides for dolphin and whale watching (the peak season is April to October).
