Get creative in Greece

Cathy's verdict
Skyros was the first travel company to offer holidays combining personal growth with fun and relaxation. Its mix of expert tuition and house party atmosphere invariably prove popular with solo travellers. We particularly recommend the creative writing courses, featuring award-winning authors, on the gorgeous Greek island of Skyros.

Skyros says

In the late 1970s, when we established Skyros, there was no such thing as a holiday centred on personal growth. We pioneered the concept of fun group holidays with expert guidance and creativity at the heart of each participant’s experience.

  • expert tuition
  • house party atmosphere
  • popular with solos
  • room share option

Since those early beginnings, in The Skyros Centre, we have developed a hugely popular and diverse choice of creative holidays first in Greece and now the Isle of Wight, with themes ranging from salsa dancing and yoga to creative writing and art.

A large proportion of our guests, mostly aged between 40 and 70 years, are travelling solo – the majority opt for our free twin-room share service (there is an option to pay a single occupancy supplement). The atmosphere is always convivial with the emphasis on fun as well as personal development – it’s a holiday after all!

Our creative writing holidays at The Skyros Centre have earned a reputation for their excellence. Based in The Skyros Centre, the idyllic surroundings, inspiring tutors and prestigious guest speakers cannot help but get those creative juices flowing. Courses are available for complete novices with a yearning to write as well as writers who want to hone their skills. Guest speakers in the past have included Hilary Mantel, Hanif Kureishi, Sue Townsend, Steven Berkoff and Graeme Simsion. A number of our Writers’ Lab participants have gone on to become published writers and playwrights.

Accommodation is in a range of village houses and apartments surrounding the centre. A typical day on our Writers’ Lab includes an optional early morning yoga session, a three hour mid-morning class and optional activities in the afternoons. Breakfast and lunch are included in the price, leaving everyone free to explore the local tavernas for dinner each evening.

We also offer less structured holidays at Atsitsa Bay with a huge range of activities including kayaking, yoga, art, music, dance, comedy, mindfulness, windsurfing, creative writing and much more.

Closer to home, the Isle of Wight is home to our own four-star Georgian country house, The Grange, where are hosting a wide range of four-night courses between August 2020 and spring 2021.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are operating The Grange only in 2020 but we are already taking bookings for a wide range of holidays in Skyros for 2021.
