    Best singles holidays for over-70s

    singles holidays for over-70s

     By Cathy Winston

If you’ve spent the years exploring the world – or wanting to explore the world – those itchy feet don’t simply disappear as you celebrate a few more birthdays.

The average age of a solo traveller is already 57, rising from 54 a few years ago, so if you’re over 70 and searching for singles holidays, you certainly aren’t alone.

You’ll find plenty of ideas on this site, but if you’d rather avoid the longest long-haul flights or anything too active, you can still be inspired by sunshine escapes, cultural breaks and getaways closer to home.

Here’s my pick of the best singles holidays for over-70s – you can also see my selection of the best over-60s singles holidays.

Singles hotels, house parties and UK breaks

Singles-only breaks and hotels catering specifically to solo travellers are a perfect starting point if you’re looking for a short break.

Singles specialist Friendship Travel has a string of house party style breaks as well as hotels for groups of singles. You could join a tour of Sicily, including a food tour on the island, while staying at the four-star Cristal Palace Hotel or relax on the beach in Turkey, where all your fellow guests at the Forever Hotel are travelling solo. It’s a sociable way to enjoy the sun, without any single supplements.

Solos Holidays, another singles specialist, has European sunshine breaks for over-50s only (and all exclusively for solo travellers), including holidays in the Greek Islands as well as Madeira and Croatia.

On Crete, the Mistral Hotel is also exclusively for solo travellers, attracting guests in their 70s with two pools, the beach and optional excursions and activities.

Travel One has its own house party holidays across Europe including Spain – most guests are aged in their 40s, 50s, and 60s but there are no age restrictions. Enjoy some winter sun in Lanzarote, as well as hotels in mainland Spain from Calpe on the Costa Blanca to Nerja in Andalucia.

If you prefer scenery to sunbathing, selected hotels from Inghams allow you to avoid single supplements on a lakes and mountains holiday in Italy, including Lake ComoLake Trasimeno and pretty Limone on Lake Garda.

And for those who want to stay in the UK, you can find short breaks exclusively for single guests from Solos Holidays, again with no supplements. You could book a special Christmas, New Year and Easter escape, as well as a range of dinner dances across the country.

Friendship Travel has similar festive breaks, including stays in MiddlesexChester and Wroxhall Abbey where you can join in activities or enjoy your own company as you prefer.

Beach holidays for singles over 70

Along with the singles specialists above, there are more short-haul sunshine escapes for solo travellers including plenty of hotels with no single supplement. Relax in the Algarve with some great offers for longer stays as well as the chance to upgrade to all-inclusive with Mercury Holidays, plus similar getaways in Cyprus.

If you’ve got time to spare, you’ll find deals on longer stays with Saga Holidays – four weeks for the price of three, for example, and no single supplement. The Hotel Iberostar Royal Andalus on Spain’s Costa de la Luz has a reputation for outstanding food, or bask in some winter sun at Hotel Aguamarina in Tenerife.

And with direct flights to St Lucia, you could also enjoy an all-inclusive stay at award-winning Bel Jou hotel if you’re happy to fly long-haul.

    Culture holidays for over-70s

From Europe’s capitals to its ancient sites, art galleries to beautiful architecture, music and even literature-themed tours, you can find plenty of expert-led cultural holidays.

Kirker Holidays specialises in music-themed breaks including festivals and events in the UK and across Europe, as well as other cultural tours which are popular with solo travellers. Selected dates and trips have no single supplement.

Or check out the tours for solo travellers from Martin Randall Travel, with a mix of European destinations as well as some more far-flung adventures. The company also has a variety of cultural tours of the UK to suit various interests.

And its new sister company, The Cultural Travel Company, has similar trips in the UK and Europe, all led by an expert speaker, but with group sizes of around 20-30 – many in its full range have low single supplements.

    Cruises for elderly solo travellers

Whether you’re looking to avoid planes, love the sociable but relaxed nature of cruises or are looking for a trip targeting older solo travellers, a cruise can be the perfect answer.

Saga Holidays has its own ships sailing from the UK, including new Spirit of Discovery, sailing from summer 2019, with around 20% of the cabins set aside for single cruisers. Alongside this more boutique experience, there’s the contemporary feel of Saga Sapphire and the more traditional Saga Pearl II until 2019. Along with all-inclusive meals and drinks, the company provides free transfers and parking, as well as events to get to know other singles on board.

For another more traditional cruise experience, Fred. Olsen is also very popular with over 70s and has no single supplement on selected dates plus some sailings from the UK. They provide gentleman dinner hosts for the more formal main restaurant, as well as companions for shore excursions if you wish, although after winning awards as one of the best cruise lines for solo travellers, it’s an easy place to strike up new friendships with others travelling alone.

River cruises are another great option, including luxury barge holidays in France, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany from European Waterways. With all-inclusive gourmet food and bar, there’s a chance to explore – including the vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne, or the scenery of the Canal du Midi – as well as special interest cruises.

And if you’ve always wanted to see the pyramids, heading to Egypt for a Nile Cruise is one of the world’s great river journeys, travelling to ancient temples in a luxurious river cruise boat.

Group tours for older solo travellers

With someone to take the stress out of arrangements and practicalities, escorted small groups tours are always a popular way to explore, with many travelling alone and some companies providing tours exclusively for solo travellers.

Cox & Kings is particularly popular with solo travellers aged over 50. The high-end group tours include four and five-star accommodation, guided sightseeing and representatives to assist with travel between destinations – their tours for single travellers include Majestic Russia.

Or Solo Travellers Group Holidays – the UK’s only specialist in escorted tours for singles – has clients aged between their 30s and 70s, with small group tours to various destinations across Europe, including DubrovnikVilniusKrakow and Bucharest.
