UK for foodies

Annabelle's verdict
When you pick a place to stay, how big a factor is the quality of the food and drink on offer? Previous generations might have said "not much". Today it might be one of our biggest considerations. Step forward i-escape which has selected and reviewed some of the very best places to eat and stay in the UK, from humble country pubs to grand Michelin-starred restaurants with rooms.

Many people now choose a place to stay based of the quality of the food – whether it’s a grand country pile, a city slicker hotel or a cheap and chic restaurant with rooms.

  • Restaurants with rooms
  • Gastro pubs
  • Country house hotels

Our team of experts not only pick out the best places to stay, but also provide honest reviews highlighting both the positive and potential negative aspects of each property.

Here’s our pick of the UK’s restaurants with rooms – those intimate, often quirky and highly individual places to stay which are big on food, flavours and hospitality with just a handful of rooms.

The seascape views from Hope Cove House in Kingsbridge, Devon are as mouth-watering as its delicious, unpretentious food – it takes the seaside B&B to a whole new level. Down in Cornwall, you can go full Poldark at The Gurnard’s Head, Zennor.

In Wiltshire, we love the Red Lion & Troutbeck Guest House with its Michelin-starred dining and vast bedrooms. Close by, in Tisbury, there’s The Beckford Arms which is a pub with rooms and lodges on site as well as great food.

In Somerset, the White Hart Somerton – dating back to the 16th Century – and The Talbot Inn at Mells are classic pubs with rooms with a local buzz.

The Cotswolds has a plethora of grand country house hotels but it’s harder to find low key, intimate options with really good food – The Wheatsheaf Inn, The Plough Inn and The Swan are our favourites.

East Anglia has rich pickings. In Essex, we highly recommend Mistley Thorn on the Stour Estuary and The Sun Inn in Dedham.

In foodie-magnet Malton, North Yorkshire, The Talbot Malton never fails to impress and, in Wales, we highly recommend The Felin Fach Griffin. In the Trossachs National Park, Monachyle Mhor is exceptional – a true gastro-bolthole.

Last but not least, you might not expect to find a restaurant with rooms in our capital city – enter Artist Residence London; it’s a gem of a place, tucked away in a quiet corner of Pimlico.

Wherever you go, we’ll give you honest advice and the very best rates – plus (at most hotels) an extra gift to get you in the holiday mood.
