The Lake District

Annabelle's verdict
Walking is bound to be the prime focus for anyone wanting to enjoy the Lake District, the region that put the great in England's Great Outdoors. But guests at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House can also indulge in other activities including fishing with a ghillie or golfing with a pro at Windermere Golf Club. Back at base, a spa and Michelin-starred food await.

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House says

A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family are the proud winners of some of the industry’s most coveted awards including AA ‘England Hotel of the Year’, English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence ‘Small Hotel of the Year’, the Catey ‘Independent Hotel of the Year’, and Condé Nast Johansens ‘Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year’.

Relaxed and unhurried, there are no conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, fabulous food and friendly, unpretentious service.

The hotel interiors are stylish, warm and comfortable with a touch of home – the sumptuous bedrooms, individually designed and furnished, have crisp white linen, luxurious bathrooms, gorgeous fabrics, wonderful upholstery and delicious art. For something really special, we offer six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tub and five detached Spa Lodges with private en suite spas and breathtaking views from the private gardens.

New for 2020, our brand new Spa Suites are spectacular indoors/outdoors sanctuaries which are as spacious (over 100m²) as they are stylish with a hanging fireplace, huge circular stone bath, a massive hot tub, plunge pond, steam room, sauna, massage chairs and lush displays of live plants suspended from a lightwell inside the suite. You’ll even find your own personal cocktail bar and wine fridge.

Along a quiet country lane nearby, enter through electric gates to discover a sanctuary – with just six suites, Gilpin’s Lake House is set on a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake with boat-house, sauna, indoor swimming pool, and outdoor cedarwood hot tub. The Lake House is also available for exclusive use, including weddings.

Food is something of a main event at Gilpin. Enjoy cocktails in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dinner (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Hrishikesh Desai ensures exquisite cuisine in the Michelin-starred and four AA Rosette  Hrishi, the main restaurant which celebrates some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For a more informal experience, Gilpin Spice is inspired by Asian flavours with an open kitchen – launched in 2017, it has already earned two AA Rosettes.
