Annabelle's verdict
What do you want from your city break? A shopping spree? The chance to see world-class art? Or maybe nothing more than long, lazy lunches at pavement cafes watching the world go by. The great thing about Madrid is that you can do them all, and Abercrombie & Kent has a hotel to suit – whether boutique chic or five-star luxury.

Abercrombie & Kent says

Spain’s vibrant capital of Madrid is a cosmopolitan cultural centre, home to some of Europe’s most astonishing art collections, stellar shopping and vibrant night life.

Art lovers won’t want to miss the Prado Museum, which has masterpieces by Velasquez, El Greco and Goya, and the Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art. At the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, you can find a history of art covering the past 800 years.

Also worth exploring is the city’s Moorish quarter. Built in the ninth century, it is a venue for open-air theatre and music performances during the summer.

Our Madrid city breaks include a private half-day tour on foot with one of our expert guides, along with entrance fees to the Palacio Real.

The streets are lined with charming cafes, restaurants and lively tapas bars. We recommend you soak up the atmosphere of the Plaza Mayor in one of the many cafes and bars lining the colonnades and, like the Madrileños, don’t start even thinking about dinner until after 9pm.

We have hand-picked our two favourite hotels. The sheer glamour of The Ritz Madrid is hard to beat, from top notch al fresco dining to the fabulous wellness centre. The more intimate Hotel Orfila has been transformed from a 14th-century palace and has just 32 highly individual rooms and suites.
