Annabelle's verdict
Less crowded than many European capitals, Lisbon has a delightfully chilled-out, sunkissed feel, with a clutch of very different neighbourhoods dotted across its seven hills. Choose from historic Alfama – the city’s Moorish heart, chic Chiado, with designer boutiques and museums, or the quiet cobbles of Amoreiras, perfect for a budget weekend break.

Lisbon is a city of surprises – of bohemian cafes next to historic mansions, and urban street art alongside designer boutiques.

A cool, arty vibe permeates everything: there’s a thriving foodie culture, cutting-edge galleries and modern interiors shops.

Best of all, it’s an easy option for a long weekend – frequent, low-cost flights, and once here, the city is easily explored on foot or by rattling yellow tram.

The Alfama district is the heart of it all – the original Moorish settlement, where cats doze on sun-dappled squares. Visit the historic São Jorge castle and you’ll see the whole of Lisbon spread out at your feet. Base yourself at this stylish adults-only hotel, with a rooftop pool, sunset fire pits and free walking tours of the district. Or sleep in a converted palace that warmly welcomes families.

Fancy something more creative? These beautiful apartments in the beating heart of the city boast rooms with handmade furnishings, gorgeous textiles and striking artworks.

The vibrant Chiado district is a cosmopolitan sprawl of boutiques, museums, old-style cafes and bookshops. Right in the middle, this apartment hotel is a dream for parents, with spacious rooms, a brilliant kids club and great restaurants nearby. Hipsters will prefer this boutique base with Art-Deco cocktail bar.

Want the ease of self-catering? We love these vintage-inspired apartments for between one and seven people, located in the trendy Baixa neighbourhood with buzzy restaurants and bars on your doorstep. Or stay in the quiet, cobbled district of Amoreiras, in a beautiful small guesthouse.

The Lisbon coast is a fabulous option, too. We’re big fans of this upmarket eco-boutique just 35-minutes from the city centre. Or this contemporary country retreat situated by an unspoiled beach in the sleepy fishing village of Comporta. And for sheer imagination, we’re bowled over by this dazzling 19th Century seafront mansion sheltered in the Bay of Cascais.

Wherever you go, we’ll give you honest advice and the very best rates – plus (at most hotels) an extra little gift as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
