Athens

Annabelle's verdict:

Away from the peak months of summer, Athens is perfect for a weekend break, particularly since the opening of the New Acropolis Museum with its £100m worth of dazzling modern architecture crammed with Classical treasures. When it comes to hotels, Athens excels at the contemporary as well as some more traditional grandes dames.

Kirker Holidays says

Ancient and modern Athens combine seamlessly to provide one of the world’s most exciting city break destinations.

Whether you are a culture vulture with a keen interest in ancient history, architecture and art or simply enjoy the buzz of a vibrant city, a few days in Athens will leave you wanting more.

Don’t miss at least one day at the Acropolis Museum – all our clients receive guaranteed entrance tickets. This treasury of ancient artefacts is located at the foot of the Acropolis and we love its use of contemporary clean lines and open space. You’ll find thousands of ancient statues, friezes and sculptures from the Parthenon and other ancient sites on the Acropolis. We especially love the exquisite Caryatids and the full-scale replica of the Parthenon frieze.

When it comes to somewhere to stay, we have picked two of the finest hotels. The classic Grande Bretagne is close to the Plaka and has a fabulous rooftop swimming pool. Close by is the equally luxurious King George which has a seventh-floor restaurant with views over the Acropolis.
