The Algarve

Annabelle's verdict:

If you think you know the Algarve, think again. Beyond the busy beach resorts, there are wonderfully unspoilt bays to discover, traditional villages and dramatically beautiful natural parks. i-escape have personal experience of every property they feature in the quieter corners of the Algarve, meaning peace, tranquillity and serious comfort are guaranteed.

Glorious sunshine, sandy beaches and low-cost airlines have long made the Algarve a hugely popular destination, but it’s the unspoiled corners of Portugal’s most popular holiday region that can provide a perfect romantic escape for couples.

We’ve personally visited the following collection of boutique hotels, eco-retreats and stylish townhouses in the Algarve’s less crowded areas, and we’ve written detailed and honest reviews that you can trust.

For accommodation with a Moroccan feel, try this historic townhouse near the stunning beaches of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It’s a rare haven of serenity and beauty.

If fabulous food in a rustic-chic setting is to your liking, opt for this stunning farmhouse renovation with just ten bedrooms – each beautifully furnished with design classics (Eames chairs) and exotic objects.

For those looking for romance but have the kids in tow, this cool and contemporary boutique hotel close to a long, unspoiled sandy beach is perfect for adults and kids alike.

For charm and style, this rural hotel with gorgeous suites set in lush gardens boasts a fabulous restaurant and two swimming pools. It’s one of our favourite recent discoveries. More tranquil gardens can be found at this Moorish-influenced bolthole, set just inland from some of the Algarve’s most picturesque beaches.

We were equally enchanted by this uniquely restored farmhouse with excellent food, located between the historic town of Tavira and the picturesque clifftop fishing village of Cacela Velha.

Finally, for couples wanting to go wild in nature, this colourful eco-retreat set within 28 hectares of eucalyptus forest provides instant off-the-grid rejuvenation, but is also close enough to some of the region’s prettiest beaches.
