Best multi-generation villa holidays in 2022

By Catherine Leech

The very idea of a family holiday has taken on even greater significance in the wake of Covid-19. Travel companies are reporting a boom in large family bookings for 2022 – grandparents, parents and kids, often with the grandparents footing the bill. We know of several bookings where four generations will gather under one roof.

Private villas are the most popular choice, not least for the freedom of your own pad and a swimming pool all to yourselves. But what else should you consider? En suite bathrooms, a separate annex for the grandparents, restaurants and beach within walking distance so nobody has to drive, the privacy of a remote location, toys and games for younger ones, somewhere to gather with other teens for older kids …

Experts in luxury villa holidays since 1972, CV Villas offers a wide range of properties throughout the Med, the Caribbean, Morocco and Sri Lanka. Not only do they set exceptionally high standards for each property but CV’s UK-based team can share personal knowledge of each property and locale to ensure you pick the right villa to suit you and your family’s needs. Many have their own kids and grandchildren so they know all about the joys and the pitfalls of picking the perfect home away from home.

Here’s our pick of the top ten villas for multi-gen family holidays in 2022.

Le Chartreuse

Fly or drive

With the option to fly or drive, the Dordogne works well. Le Chartreuse is an elegant 10-bedroom chateau with its own private lake as well as a large pool, table tennis, gym, croquet, boules court and yoga studio plus the option for breakfast service or a cook for other meals. Each of the ten bedrooms has a private bathroom and The Barn provides a separate living area, kitchen and three bedrooms.

For something a little more low-key, Maison de la Foret is a restored farmhouse hamlet with five en suite bedrooms set across three buildings – a peaceful, rural idyll in easy striking distance of Brive, Bergerac and Bordeaux airports.

Nero Beach House

On your doorstep

The ability to walk to the beach, a restaurant and shops without someone having to drive is a bonus for many, a deal-breaker for some. Nero Beach House, located on Corfu’s sandy Kalamaki Beach, has two tavernas and a beach bar within 100m with a supermarket, other beaches and tavernas all within two to six kms. Ground floor en suite bedrooms work well for any grandparents who struggle with steps with two more en suite bedrooms on the first and lower ground floors. A cook service is available too.

On the Croatia island of Brac, Tourmaline is a contemporary five-bedroom townhouse located on the water’s edge. Shops, bars and restaurants are all 300m away – ideal for teenagers – and the local speed boat water taxis will whisk you there after your arrival at Split airport. What a way to start your holiday.

Old Pollensa is one of Mallorca’s most charming and atmospheric places to explore – and it’s within an easy walk of Bella Fonte. This pretty five-bedroom villa is all set on one level and has a separate one-bedroomed annexe.

Villa Balbina

Push the boat out

Whether you have a special birthday, anniversary, postponed wedding or simply want to spoil all the family, CV Villas has curated an exceptional range of ‘Above” staffed villas – concierge service, a private cook, private jet, in-villa spa services and childcare can all be arranged to suit you. In the Algarve, Villa Balbina is a stylish property with direct beach access and the Michelin-starred Villa Joya restaurant within walking distance. There are five bedrooms and cook service is included.

In Italy’s stunning Umbria region, Villa Chianina sleeps up to 16 in the main building and guest house, has commanding views from its extensive gardens and infinity pool over glorious countryside. It sits in glorious isolation with a property manager on hand for anything you require.

Crystal Springs

Winter sun

Think of the moment you tell the family that you’re whisking them off to the Caribbean – in December! CV’s choice of villas which guarantee winter sun includes some real gems – treat everyone with a stay at Crystal Springs on the famed West coast of Barbados. With ten en suite bedrooms and interiors designed by Oliver Messel, it’s as stylish as it is idyllically located, bang on the beach. Your own chef, butler and boat master are all on hand.

On Sri Lanka’s southern coast, Tamarind Sands is a contemporary beach house with an exceptional team of staff – there’s an open air yoga studio, Ayurveda studio and even a rooftop bar for evening cocktails as the sun sets. Teenagers will love the two-bedroomed annexe.

Closer to home, with reliable winter sun, is Morocco. CV has introduced a choice of villas close to Marrakech so you can combine some fascinating sightseeing and cultural immersion with the luxury of your own staffed villa. Villa Cobalt Blue, for example, sleeps up to 14 in top notch comfort. Not only does it have a beautiful pool, tennis court and hammam but it is also adjacent to the renowned Assoufid golf course.
