Meet the Boss: James Morris of Holiday Cottages

James Morris, Holiday CottagesHoliday Cottages

This week in Meet the Boss we talk to James Morris, Managing Director of holidaycottages.co.uk. The company was founded by James’s father in 1989 and James took over the helm at the age of 21, in 1999. James got married in September 2012 and is currently renovating his home.

* Where did you go on holiday in 2012, and why? Any plans for 2013?

“We went to Glasgow for a friend’s wedding and extended our stay around Loch Lomond. We also went to Italy for our honeymoon. We visited the Amalfi Coast, Rome and Florence. This year I am off to Bath with my family in May for a few nights then we have a wedding in Scotland in June from which we have decided to take a week’s break and then hopefully a villa in Greece later in the year.”

* What is your favourite bolthole in the UK and why?

“Bristol and the Bath area are my favourite boltholes. Work takes me to both those places on a fairly regular basis and I like the buzz of both – there’s always something going on and there are great places to eat.”

* If you could spend a long weekend in any city abroad, which would you pick, and why?

“After my trip a few years ago, it would have to be New York – it’s simply fantastic. Slightly closer to home, though, it would be Rome.”

* Please tell us three items that are always found in your luggage.

“My iPad, swimming trunks and a tooth brush.”

* What one thing would most improve people’s overall holiday experience?

“Good customer service and friendly smiles make all the difference. It has to be the main priority of any holiday in my opinion.”

* What has been your worst holiday experience?

“I think I have been fairly lucky on my holidays, but it was probably coming back from Rhodes. The flight was delayed for 12 hours and then we were flown back to Manchester instead of Bristol so we had to endure a long bus journey to get us back to the car.”

* Tell us your favourite hotel

In the UK: “Bovey Castle, on Dartmoor National Park in Devon.”

In Europe: “The legendary Hotel Don Carlos in Marbella.”

Rest of the world: “The Standard, East Village in New York City. The company now has a hotel on the High Line too.”

* What is the most exciting project your company is working on right now?

“This year, we have started to cover the whole of the UK, as we had previously only operated in the West Country and Wales. It entails a lot of hard work but we want to offer a great collection of Holiday Cottages throughout the whole of the UK. Already we have signed up properties in new regions and they have been well received by our customers.”

* Thanks, James.
