Malta and Gozo

Mark and David's verdict:

Two of the Mediterranean’s smallest islands, Malta and Gozo punch well above their weight. Aside from sea and sunshine, vibrant Malta is jam-packed with history from megalithic temples to the Knights of Saint John, its skyline dotted with grand churches and golden walled cities. Gozo, Malta’s little sister, offers tranquillity, rural beauty and top diving.

Classic Collection Holidays says

Holidays in Malta offer so much more than you might expect, surprising when you consider that the Maltese islands cover an area smaller than the Isle of Wight.

  • Historic sights
  • Superb beaches
  • Year-round sun

Malta and neighbouring Gozo boast an array of attractions from pre-historic remains to glorious beaches and crystal-clear waters. Located south of Sicily and the boot of Italy, there’s year-round sunshine too.

Malta is a compact place to explore – don’t miss the commanding views of the Grand Harbour and labyrinthine streets of Valetta, the grand Baroque churches and the island’s beautifully-preserved megalithic temples.

Exuberant village fiestas in the summer months include colourful parades and fireworks. Wherever you go, you can’t fail to feel the warmth of the Maltese people.

For the ultimate in luxury, we recommend the Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta, Malta’s most prestigious address with breathtaking harbour views. Alternatively, the Westin Dragonara Resort is perfectly located on a private peninsula close to the shops and restaurants of lively St Julian’s.

For something more unique, in the ancient walled city of Mdina, there’s The Xara Palace Relais & Chateau – a tranquil haven in a former 17th century Palazzo filled with grand antiques and artworks.

Sleepy, unspoiled Gozo offers superb coastal scenery, some of Europe’s best scuba diving, great walking, some fine beaches, a megalithic temple and a medieval citadel all wrapped up in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

We recommend the five-star Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz for a relaxing escape – there’s fine dining, a generous pool and a top notch spa. Romantics should consider the more intimate Ta’ Cenc, a stylish bolt hole with superb Italian-influenced cuisine.
