Hottest Greek islands in February

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

Make no mistake, Greece is not hot in February but the weather is slowly starting to warm up, and it’s a whole lot nicer than the UK or elsewhere in Northern Europe. You might get some cloud and even some light rain showers, but if you head to the southerly islands you can expect up to six hours of daily sunshine.

But there’s a problem. Some islands close down in the winter for visitors, with hotel and restaurant owners returning to the mainland. It’s a good time for a city break to Athens, which in summer can get unbearably hot. If you crave an island, you should head for one of the larger ones such as Crete, Rhodes or Corfu, but with no direct flights you will probably need to change aircraft at Athens.

Frankly, if you are just looking for winter sunshine, you are better off in the Canary Islands in February, or Madeira, with lots of direct flights and reliable weather. If you want a taste of Greece, you could head to Cyprus. There are direct flights in February from the UK to Larnaca and Paphos. See where else is hot in February in Europe.

February is, however, a fun time to be in Greece. Carnival (Apokries) is a cultural event celebrated all over the country in the run up to Greek Orthodox Easter, and usually falls at the end of February.

Which islands will be the hottest in February?

Cyprus

Average maximum temperature in April: 16ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 6
Flying time from UK: 4.5 hours
Monthly rainfall: 76mm

Though technically not a Greek island, but a Greek speaking nation, Cyprus benefits from higher temperatures, longer hours of sunshine and less rainfall. The mild February weather is perfect for exploring the rich culture of one of the oldest civilisations in the Mediterranean and hiking its many trails. There will be enough places open in low season for you to have an enjoyable trip. For self-catering see these villas in Cyprus.

Kos

Average maximum temperature in April: 14ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 6
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 115mm

Due to its southern location, Kos is consistently one of the warmest Greek islands. February is a great time to explore its quaint villages and experience traditional local life. Some food and drink places will be open but many of the summer season locations will be closed over winter. Explore Kos’ dramatic landscape and ancient ruins without the usual rush of tourists. We recommend staying at the good-value all-inclusive Ikos Aria in Kos.

Rhodes

Average maximum temperature in April: 15ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 6
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 129mm

Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands, experiences mild and sunny weather in February. The low humidity makes it a great time of year to explore the cobbled streets of the city’s Old Town and discover the island’s ancient ruins. However, a rain jacket is advised as rainfall is high in February. Rhodes is steeped in cultural heritage and many attractions stay open year-round due to its size. Corfu

Average maximum temperature in April: 13ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 4
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 149mm

Slightly closer to the UK, Corfu experiences cooler weather than the more southern Greek islands. The mild daytime temperatures turn into chilly nights. Expect some rain and a few places to be closed. Explore the island’s many monasteries and experience the great cuisine and Venetian architecture of UNESCO-listed Corfu Town. Search for villas in Corfu.

Crete

Average maximum temperature in April: 14ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 5
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 118mm

Crete is Greece’s largest island and has one of the mildest winter climates in the Mediterranean. Due to its size and vast terrain, there is much to explore, and many attractions stay open year-round. With a plethora of historical sights, the low season makes a great time to avoid the crowds. The south coast is usually warmer than the north, but be sure to pack for cool nights and rain showers. See this guide to Crete.

Kefalonia

Average maximum temperature in April: 13ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 5
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 118mm

Kefalonia is another island that is relatively nearby for UK visitors, and tends to be wet and cool in February. Though it will be too cold for sunbathing, there is much to explore on the ‘exotic’ island including its forest-covered mountains, limestone cliffs and Venetian castles. There are plenty of local eateries and attractions open all year. Find the best villas in Kefalonia.

Santorini

Average maximum temperature in April: 14ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 5
Flying time from UK: via Athens
Monthly rainfall: 81mm

Santorini experiences mild weather in February and is one of the driest Greek islands. February is a good time to explore Santorini’s winemaking heritage and visit its historical museums. Take advantage of the low season prices by staying at one of the higher-end hotels. Some food and drink places will be closed, but many will remain open year round. Find the best hotels in Santorini .

Paxos

Average maximum temperature in April: 12ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 5
Flying time from UK: via Athens to Corfu, then ferry
Monthly rainfall: 148mm

A short ferry ride from Corfu, Paxos is likely to be very sleepy in the winter months. The weather in February is fairly cold and rainfall is high. There will be some places open to eat and drink, but others will close for the winter months, along with some hotels. The quiet and unspoilt island boasts crystal clear waters and picturesque fishing villages. You can also visit the charming neighbouring island Antipaxos via taxi boat. Keep in mind that boat connections will be less frequent at this time of year. Search for villas in Paxos.
