Family safari villas

Mark's verdict:

If ever there is a holiday that gets your kids to put down their devices, it is a safari. Zambia excels for wildlife-loving families and has some stunning private houses and kid-friendly lodges, many with extra activities such as pools and canoeing to add variety. Add to the fun by staying in a tented camp or tree house.

Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Botswana have great safari villas, but it’s in Zambia that you find the greatest variety.

Wildlife abounds in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and the Lower Zambezi Valley, while the area around Livingstone and the Victoria Falls is full of adventurous pursuits. With activities including walking safaris, canoe safaris, night drives and river cruises, Zambia is an excellent choice for family holidays.

Safari villas in the Livingstone area include the Garden Cottage and Dog House at Tongabezi, or just a little upstream, Tangala Private House. All are within easy reach of Victoria Falls and connect easily with Zambia’s game parks (Botswana’s too for that matter).

Chongwe River House in the Lower Zambezi is a firm favourite, with rave reviews to match. It’s got everything you could want on a family safari – pool, garden, private river access, fabulous views, its own vehicle and guides.

Heading into the South Luangwa, take a look at Luangwa Safari House and Robin’s House. Or how about Jackleberry Tree House, built into a tree about 8ft above ground, which is a superb spot to watch wildlife wandering past – oblivious to your presence!

Some luxury lodges offer villas, giving you privacy and the opportunity to mix with other guests. Options in Zambia include Chinzombo Camp and Sausage Tree Camp’s lovely tented Kigelia House.

The dry season is from May to October, with the best game-viewing opportunities. The bush is more green and lush between December and April.
