Family cruises

Amanda's verdict
The new generation of cruise ships are perfect for families. They offer something for everyone, from world class entertainment to activities such as climbing walls and ziplines. Add to that restaurants that work for everyone from babies to grannies and the buzz of arriving in a new destination each day you can see why more families than ever are cruising.

Family cruising is one of the fastest-growing sectors in travel not least amongst “3G” (three-generation) families. The reason is simple – a family cruise not only offers excellent value but it’s also the perfect way for all the family to relax together knowing that there’s entertainment and activities for everyone as well as the chance to discover new places together – without unpacking!

Most of the major cruise lines now offer fantastic facilities for children on board their ships from interconnecting cabins and family suites, to exciting kids clubs with highly-trained staff, on-board activities for all ages and informal family-friendly dining options.

Disney Cruise Lines is an obvious choice for families with younger children – kids can meet some of their favourite Disney characters on board, the whole family can enjoy Disney films and live musicals and there are outstanding clubs for all ages, including teenagers. They’re not cheap but they offer a lifetime of memories for the whole family with year-round itineraries in Europe and the Caribbean.

Marella Cruises (formerly known as Thomson Cruises) is one of the only family-friendly cruise lines to offer fully-inclusive rates, even including tips. Their kids clubs and children’s menus are excellent and you can opt for a fly-cruise or to sail from Southampton.

P&O Cruises’ Ventura was designed with families in mind and the choice of activities is fantastic – from four-player Scalextric, a Rock School and 3D films to its very own Cirque Ventura, where kids can learn circus skills. Ventura and sister ship, Azura, are top choices if you have toddlers too – they offer expert care for under-twos.

For all-singing and dancing entertainment and on-board activities, it’s hard to beat Royal Caribbean Cruises. They have certainly raised the bar with their latest ship boasting a Flowrider surf simulator, the tallest slide at sea, a rock climbing wall, zip line and on-board waterpark with thrilling waterslides. The casual dining options include loads of choice for all the family too.
