Beautiful Belize

Our verdict:

Belize sounds like an exotic holiday and you would be right; yet that doesn’t mean it is out of bounds for families. This central American nation is unspoilt yet accessible and offers much for families looking for an adventure. Explore has some perfect family-friendly trips. Think rainforests packed with wildlife, snorkelling on colourful reefs, pristine beaches and the excitement of Mayan pyramids.

Belize is one of our favourite destinations for families who want a unique adventure in a country that is easy to travel around yet untouched by mass tourism. Experiences include ancient Mayan sites, lagoon walks, wildlife encounters in sanctuaries and reserves, stays in jungle lodges and time to relax on the coast with its colourful barrier reef.

We have created an exciting two-week small group trip for families (minimum age 7 years) for 10 to 16 people, with departures in July and August. Led by one of our own tour leaders and local guides, you’ll travel by bus and boat and stay in simple but characterful hotels and lodges.

Budding wildlife enthusiasts will be able to look out for howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, parrots and crocodiles in the tropical forests as well as colourful bird life in the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, viewed from a boat.

A highlight for many is a stay at a jungle lodge in the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Sanctuary, a rainforest reserve where you may see the elusive jaguar, or at least its tracks.

Belize has a rich Mayan heritage – highlights on this trip include time at well preserved sites such as the ancient temples and huge pyramid of Xunantunich and the Lamanai jungle ruins, which date back more than 2,000 years.

A visit to the Blue Hole National Park includes a chance to swim in the crystal clear water of its incredible limestone sink hole, surrounded by jungle, and explore the vast cave complex. There’s an option to enjoy cave-canoeing too.

Our two-week itinerary includes plenty of downtime on the coast – you can decide how much or how little you do as you soak up the unique atmosphere of Belize’s offshore islands such as Tobacco Caye and Caye Caulker. There are opportunities to snorkel over the corals of the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, go scuba-diving, see manatees, and try your hand at fishing or kayaking.

If you would prefer a private trip, we can tailor make a family holiday in Belize for six or more people travelling together.
