Explore the Great Lakes

Mike & Donna's verdict:

Most British visitors only see the Great Lakes by flying over them, admiring the greatest expanse of freshwater in the world, but at ground level they’re even more awe-inspiring. Discover beautiful beaches and dunes, fresh and tasty food, the quiet communities and outdoor lifestyle that all make this region such a wonderful revelation.

Trailfinders says

The Great Lakes region alone is the size of continental Europe – it includes the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin and is home to some of the USA’s most spectacular scenery, exciting cities and breathtaking lake shores.

Our 12-night Great Lakes Loop Fly-Drive holiday will give you a taste of all that this region has to offer, from The Windy City of Chicago to sleepy Mackinac Island. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the lakes themselves, which are more like inland seas with their deserted beaches, dunes and rocky peninsulas, interspersed with thousands of smaller lakes, streams and rural wilderness.

Our suggested itinerary is gently paced, covering between 87 and 216 miles each day. You will find a comfortable hotel waiting for you at the end of each day (upgraded hotel accommodation is available on request).

Highlights include a night in Chicago, Milwaukee (home to the Harley Davidson Museum), the scenic Door County peninsula, Traverse City, Saugatuck and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

This 12-night fly-drive is ideal between May and October and costs from around £1,264 per person excluding transatlantic flights.
