East coast Malaysia

Mark and David's verdict

Most visitors to Malaysia head for the resorts on the west coast but for unspoilt beaches, lush countryside and fascinating local culture we recommend a visit to the quieter east coast of the peninsular. You’ll find jungle treks, authentic fishing villages, rivers and islands to explore and some gorgeous hotels.

Turquoise Holidays says

Malaysia not only offers fascinating history, rich culture, fabulous beaches and mouth-watering food;it is also home to some of the world’s finest hotels.

Tanjong Jara Resort, one of our favourites, is a sanctuary of luxury and well-being, located on the golden beaches of Malaysia’s east coast. It may have 99 rooms spread across 54 acres but it has all the intimacy, attention to detail and style of a small boutique hideaway.

This luxury resort has been designed to recall the grandeur of the majestic 17th century Malay palaces and it will give you an authentic taste of Malaysia’s finest traditions of hospitality.

The spacious rooms are beautifully and traditionally furnished with local timber and rich fabrics; they have views of either the landscaped gardens or the beach. The superior, sea-facing Anjung rooms offer a romantic outdoor bath.

Take a vigorous hike up to Chemerung Waterfalls, enjoy cycling, tennis, or explore the rich marine life off Tenggol Island – home to some of Asia’s finest diving and snorkelling. The PADI dive school offers courses and equipment (dive season is from 1 March to 30 October).

There are two pools, an exquisite and endless beach, batik painting, nature walks, visits to the local markets and cooking classes.

The award-winning Spa Village offers a vast array of pampering treatments, many of them based on ancient Malay traditions.

Dine in a relaxed atmosphere overlooking the lagoon or the sea in either one of the fine restaurants that specialise in Asian, Western and seafood cuisine.
