The Alps in summer

David & Mark's verdict

Once the last of the snow has melted and summer comes around, the Alps spring back to life, with hillsides carpeted with flowers and sunshine glistening off lakes. Stay in a cosy Alpine village and choose from a menu of thrilling activities, from mountain biking and rock climbing to glacier skiing and white-water rafting.

Peak Retreats says

Skiing on real snow in the middle of the summer is just one of the activities on offer in the French Alps. Rising between 2,800m and 3,600m, the resort of Les Deux Alpes is the largest skiable glacier in Europe and is open to skiers and snowboarders every morning between mid-June and the end of August.

In the afternoon there are more than 40 other activities on the menu, most of them suitable for all the family. They range from hiking and mountain biking to white-water rafting and paragliding. Alternatively, you can simply relax in the sunshine, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.

Accommodation choices include a range of self-catering chalets and apartments, and great-value hotels. In terms of cost, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as summer prices in the Alps beat most other popular destinations in France.

As a French Alps specialist, we feature quality accommodation in 26 resorts in summer, including famous lake locations such as Annecy and Evian, and 38 ski resorts in winter when we also offer packages with ski school, lift passes and ski hire, and private airport transfers or travel by ferry or Eurotunnel.
