Wild Finland

Cathy's verdict:

In deep winter snow or the summer midnight sun, Finland’s wildlife and countryside are hard to beat for outdoors adventure. View the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle between husky safaris and snowmobiling, or discover wolves and bears in a wooded wilderness, on a small group trip where more than half of guests arrive alone.

One of our favourite European adventure destinations in winter and summer is Finland – it ticks virtually every box with a huge range of activities, extraordinary natural beauty, pristine open spaces, wildlife and, in Finnish Lapland, the Northern Lights.

If time is short and you are itching to witness the Aurora Borealis, check out this three-night trip high above the Arctic Circle, with departures in January, February, March and December. We search for the Northern Lights by snowshoe, husky safaris and snow mobiles with free time built in to enjoy fun snow activities such as cross-country skiing and sledging and relax back at the hotel. An Aurora Workshop is also included, with top tips for photographing the Northern Lights.

With departures in May and August, our Taiga Forests trip is a six-night wildlife adventure in the wilderness. The Kainnu region lies just beneath the Arctic Circle, with virtually 24 hours of daylight in the summer months. With a combination of husky trekking, biking and canoeing, we’ll look for wolf, bear, lynx, elk, reindeer, pine marten, capercaillie and black grouse.

Accommodation is in a charming lakeside hotel for four nights. The other two nights are even more special.

On one night, we’ll make like Ray Mears, setting up camp in the forest and foraging for our own food. Another night is spent in a purpose-built bear hide, the perfect spot to witness nocturnal wildlife activity.

On all our group trips, you can opt to twin-share with someone of the same sex or pay a supplement for your own room – most opt for the former. Many of our customers have become lifelong friends, bonding over incredible shared experiences amongst like-minded adventurers.
