Cruising for over-50s

Cathy's verdict:

Cruise holidays are perfect for solo travellers, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy your own company on board or meet new people as you travel. And with dedicated single cabins and UK sailings, Saga's fleet of two ships offer more traditional or contemporary informal cruising including four-night trips and beginners cruises, all for over-50s only.

Saga Travel says

We offer a wide range of cruises worldwide on our own two ships – Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II. They are hard to beat due to the style of cruising and personal service we offer plus each ship has a generous number of single cabins.

  • dedicated single cabins
  • no need to fly
  • over-50s only
  • sailings from Southampton & Dover

We offer a singles meet up on each port day morning so you can team up with others and explore together. There’s also a Singles Mingle drinks party early in the cruise and a Singles Luncheon – all designed for you to meet up with other independent travellers without any formality.

Saga Sapphire is the more contemporary of the two, with a maximum capacity of 720 passengers. There’s a wide choice of restaurants with open seating and more casual dining options including our poolside Beach Club serving traditional fish and chips.

You’ll find lots of deck space with two pools and hot tubs but if you want to be more active, there’s a gymnasium, crazy golf course, academy computer and learning centre with guest lecturers, a Club House games room and Aqua Spa. Relax in the drawing room, library and cocktail bars and feel free to dip in and out of the low-key evening entertainment.

Saga Sapphire has year-round sailings from 4 to 34 nights.

Saga Pearl II offers a more intimate and traditional cruise experience, carrying just 449 passengers. Whilst there are swimming pools, a gym, spa and even a short tennis court, on-board social life tends to revolve around the Discovery Lounge where we have presentations, talks, dance classes and traditional afternoon tea – and, after dinner, musicians, celebrity guests, our own theatre company and resident band.

Dining is a little more formal with waiter-service at all meals in the Dining Room and the Veranda with a choice of open or fixed seating.

Saga Pearl II’s year-round sailings range from 5 nights to 73 nights.

On both ships, all cruises begin and end at either Southampton or Dover. Our prices include all gratuities, entertainment, meals (including 24-hour room service), a welcome cocktail party and Captain’s dinner. We even include transfers between your home and the port (up to 250 miles) or free car parking.
