Stay in a restored building

Annabelle's verdict

The best holiday houses have a story to tell, and few come with more history than the properties offered by the Vivat Trust. Historic buildings that have fallen into disrepair are rescued by the Trust and painstakingly restored, offering all types of accommodation from picturesque boltholes for two, to spectacular rural halls that are perfect for an unforgettable houseparty.

Vivat Trust says

We were established in 1981 as a national charity and building preservation trust. We rescue disused and dilapidated historic buildings, preserving them for the nation’s benefit.

Once restored, the buildings are available as unique historic holiday lets.

The income from lettings ensures the on-going maintenance and running costs are met and also contributes towards new projects.

The Trust has a wide range of 22 high quality properties in England, Scotland and Wales. They range from intimate retreats for couples to large country houses.

One of the most popular choices for couples is The Summerhouse, an Elizabethan banqueting tower in Shropshire which is now a romantic retreat for two, with a four poster bed and a wood-burning stove.

Mill Hill Cottage, sleeping up to four, is a charming thatched cottage in Lincolnshire, perfect for cycling through the Wolds. Countryside lovers will also like North Lees Hall, a magnificent tower house in the heart of the Peak District National Park; it sleeps up to six.

If you prefer a city break, there’s Old Observatory House, an iconic building on Calton Hill with far reaching views of Edinburgh. Kinghorn Town Hall is a grand apartment in Fife and a great base for golfing weekends for up to five.

Explore Dorset’s amazing Jurassic Coast from The Chantry, a medieval residence in Bridport which sleeps up to five. For larger family gatherings, there’s Stonegarthside Hall, a remote country house in Cumbria which sleeps up to 14.
