Pen-y-Dyffryn

Annabelle's verdict:

Hitting the sweet spot between old-fashioned style and a contemporary feel can be a tall order, but Pen y Dyffryn, on the Shropshire-Wales border, gets it bang on. Cosy without being chintzy, it is set amidst lush rolling hills and wooded glades. A walk across the hills is the best way to work up an appetite for the spectacular dinners.

Pen-y-Dyffryn says

In a stunning location on the last hill in Shropshire, midway between Chester and Shrewsbury, and 100 yards from the Welsh border, this silver-stone Georgian Rectory is now a stylish country house hotel.

In five acres of grounds, with no passing traffic, Pen-y-Dyffryn combines unobtrusive hospitality with high standards of service to guarantee that “away from it all” feeling.

Our restaurant has two AA rosettes and the stunning food is the most popular reason cited by guests for returning time after time.

Some bedrooms have en-suite Jacuzzis whilst those in The Coach-House have private patios. The star of the piece, however, is the hotel’s hillside setting facing the Welsh mountains to the west. Sundowners are a must!

The National Trust properties of Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham and Erddig are all nearby, as is Wales’ highest waterfall and beautiful Lake Vyrnwy. It’s hill-walking heaven and the medieval towns of Shrewsbury and Chester are both within half an hour.

Pets are welcome.

Pen-y-Dyffryn was chosen as Country Hotel of the Year by The Good Hotel Guide, and Rural Retreat of the Year by the Which Hotel Guide. We have also been nominated twice as Johansen’s Best Value Hotel. Harden’s Hotel Guides gave us top marks throughout, a distinction granted to only 27 hotels in Britain, Ireland, New York and Paris.
