101 Short Breaks

Pas de Calais

Annabelle's verdict

It may be just a hop across the Channel but in pockets of the Pas de Calais you'll feel as immersed in the “real” France as if you'd driven half way across the country. Authentic, simple and great value, the Auberge d’Inxent ticks every box for us, not least for its excellent cooking and low-key charm.

Inntravel says

Small, family-run hotels are a great French tradition and make an excellent choice for a special celebration or simply a long weekend.

We have been offering short breaks across the Channel since 1984 and know exactly what to look for in these wonderful auberges – bags of character, comfortable bedrooms, an attractive setting with plenty of local interest and, above all, a welcoming atmosphere with excellent food and wine.

We even throw in a free bottle of champagne with every booking!

The Auberge d’Inxent, just 39 miles from Calais yet situated in rolling countryside, is just such a place. As soon as you enter this appealing, flower-bedecked place in the delightful hamlet of Inxent, you feel as though you are in the very heart of France.

Full of cottage charm, with five cosy, prettily decorated bedrooms and gardens planted with roses and fruit trees which lead down to the river, this ancient 2-star inn (the building dates back to 1770) is the essence of the traditional rural auberge.

The Six family offers warm hospitality and traditional cuisine, served in the beamed restaurant. Take your pick from the regional specialities, crafted from local produce, that are featured on the 4-course Menu du Terroir.

Just as tempting are the wines – Monsieur Six is an experienced sommelier – and there is also a small reading room and terrace.

So close to Calais, this is a tempting spot for a getaway at any time of the year. Good for shopping, exploring market towns and visiting the WW1 battlefields, northern France also boasts an attractive coast and some picturesque valleys.

Inntravel’s breaks to the Auberge d’Inxent include a Channel crossing with P&O Ferries from Dover to Calais, two nights’ half board accommodation and a free bottle of champagne for each booking.
