It may look like a practical joke, but these suggestive columns are, in fact, natural rock formations in the Turkish region of Cappadocia. Locals have proudly dubbed the area “Love Valley”.

There are hundreds of these phallic-shaped rocks, created over millions of years by wind erosion. Some have even been hewn out to create homes.

Love Valley is just one of the many treats in store in Cappadocia, a fascinating corner of Turkey. We recommend a week-long walking holiday with Inntravel that takes in rock-hewn churches, the troglodyte town of Goreme, river gorges and Byzantine frescoes. You hike 7 – 14km each day, after which your luggage, a good meal and a comfortable bed awaits in a small friendly hotel.

This independent walking holiday, Two Faces of Cappadocia, costs from £530 pp including 7 nights B&B , 2 dinners, taxi transfers from Kayseri airport, luggage transfers and walking notes. Departures are available March to November, excluding July and August. Flights are extra.
