Want to treat yourself to a break in the New Year? Our editors, Mark Hodson and David Wickers, have come up with a list of suggestions of where to go on holiday in January. Their tips include Egypt for cut-price sun, Oman for culture and – to burn off those Christmas calories – a fitness break in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Other tips include Tobago, St Lucia and Grenada in the Caribbean, where the weather is perfect but prices tend to slump shortly after the Christmas and New Year peak season. In the Canaries, Mark and David recommend the little-known island of La Palma, which has quiet beaches and lush volcanic hillsides great for hiking or exploring by car.
For travellers that want to embrace winter, rather than escape it, our editors recommend St Petersburg and Tromso in Norway, a great place to view the Northern Lights. And, of course, January is one of the best months to ski, with great prices on the slopes.
