This week we launched our second website, 101 short breaks. As the name suggests, it’s all about … well … short breaks. Like our first site, 101 Holidays, it’s a travel inspiration site. You know you want to get away for a few days, and you’re looking for ideas.
As with all our sites, the holidays have been handpicked by two of the UK’s leading travel writers. That’s us: Mark Hodson and David Wickers. Between us, we have 40 years of experience writing travel articles for national newspapers and magazines.
The short breaks featured on the site focus strongly on the UK, but also include some great ideas in Europe and beyond. What we’ve tried to do is look beyond the obvious to feature some really exciting and unexpected holiday ideas – plus a few tried and tested classics.
For instance, you can sleep on a luxury yacht moored in a marina in Devon, spend a weekend in Tromso, Norway to marvel at the Northern Lights, go retro and rent a classic VW Camper or take the Eurostar to Lille to eat at a legendary seafood restaurant, L’Huîtrière.
Some of our personal favourite places to stay include Ferme du Vert, a working farm just 30 minutes from Calais, and Hisa Franko, a stylish small hotel in Slovenia’s Soca Valley, perfect for hiking breaks.
You can easily explore by site by hovering over a grid of images on the homepage. You can filter the options by budget, destination or experience (for example, “I want to be romantic”, “I want to be amazed” or “I want to hit the beach”).
All budgets are catered for, from a £60 working weekend with the National Trust to a day trip to Paris by private jet with a Michelin-starred lunch (£998 per person based on six people sharing).
Other original short break ideas include a photography course in Liverpool, wakeboarding in the Cotswolds, stand up paddleboarding in Cornwall (easier to learn than surfing), a survival course on Dartmoor, tennis coaching in the Alps and exciting city break ideas including Leeds, Athens, Belgrade, St Petersburg and Cairo.
We’re confident that the new site will be as popular and successful as the first. 101 Holidays had some great press coverage and was named by The Times among the Hot 10 Websites for 2009. It was shortlisted for two prestigious industry awards, including the Travolution Tr@vel Pioneer Award.
We hope you enjoy exploring 101 short breaks – if you have a comment please write it below!
