Historic villas in France

David & Mark's verdict

A villa holiday is all about freedom, escaping the overcrowded resorts of the Med and sinking back into your private domain, splashing in your pool, cooking on the barbecue, sipping wine on the terrace. Don’t go for a new-build concrete box. Instead, rent a historic house or chateau in rural France within easy reach of a Channel port.

For more than 20 years, Dominique’s Villas has selected the finest rental villas across France. Each of the 140 properties in its portfolio is individually selected by Dominique Wells.

One of Dominique’s personal favourites is Mersac, a beautiful “maison forte” on the borders of the Tarn-et-Garonne and the Lot-et-Garonne in Southwest France. Classified as a national monument, its history can be traced back to the siege of Simon de Montfort in 1213. In the 18th Century, it was a favourite bolthole of the Duchesse de Berry.

The château enjoys a quiet location with 15 hectares of grounds, a large private pool, panoramic views and a magnificent courtyard and covered terrace. It comfortably sleeps 13 people in 7 bedrooms. Click here for prices

More than 20% of the properties in the Dominique’s Villas collection are châteaux or historic buildings. These include an 11th-Century fairytale château in the Auvergne, a traditional Normandy farmhouse with private pool and tennis court close to Honfleur and a majestic 12th-Century style château overlooking the Dordogne River with private pool and a chef. For those who prefer a modern look, there is a contemporary designer villa in St Tropez.

Dominique’s determined pursuit of excellence – she personally rejects dozens of properties – has helped to build a high number of repeat customers, as well as faithful owners, some of whom have been with Dominique’s Villas since their first season.
