Gorillas in Rwanda

David & Mark's verdict

It’s one of the most thrilling travel experiences on Earth: hike high into the jungles of Rwanda for an intimate encounter with mountain gorillas. Combine the trip into the Volcanoes National Park with a visit to Nyungwe Forest National Park, home to chimps and Colobus Monkeys, then kick back on the shores of Rwanda's Lake Kivu.

Abercrombie & Kent says

Tracking gorillas with experienced guides is one of the planet’s great travel experiences, and Rwanda, home to the magnificent mountain gorilla and 13 other primate species, is the place to do it.

Our fully-guided itinerary begins with a flight via Nairobi to Kigali, where you will have an opportunity to visit the Kigali Memorial Centre for an emotional and powerful insight into Rwanda’s turbulent past.

The drive north to Ruhengeri takes you to the Virunga Mountain Range and the Volcanoes National Park, where half the world’s remaining 650 mountain gorillas roam freely. Led by experienced trackers, you will make your way through the forest in search of one of four habituated gorilla families, spending time quietly observing them.

After a second morning of gorilla trekking, you’ll depart for the shores of Lake Kivu, the largest lake in Rwanda, where the local life and colourful street markets provide a total contrast to the forest.

With an overnight stay on the lakeside in Gisenyi and a final night in Kigali, it is back to Nairobi for your flight home. Alternatively, allow us to use our considerable knowledge and experience to combine Rwanda with a safari or beach holiday, or both, elsewhere in Africa.
