Recommended tour operator: The Gambia Experience

The Gambia Experience says
The Gambia may be a small country on Africa’s west coast, but what it lacks in size it makes up for with verve and vibrancy: it positively sings with life and colour.
Only six hours from the UK, and in the same time zone, it has beautiful and relatively uncrowded beaches, an excellent range of accommodation, a superb array of fine restaurants, and it’s home to some of the friendliest people we’ve found anywhere in the world. No wonder it’s called ‘the smiling coast’.
Since we first started sending holidaymakers to The Gambia in 1987, we’ve seen the range and standard of accommodation improve greatly.
Now you can stay in one of the original traditional style hotels such as African Village, or the lively and popular Kombo Beach with its poolside activities, explore from one of our eco-lodges, or treat yourselves to one of our Luxury Collection hotels like the all-inclusive option at The Sheraton or the sumptuous Coco Ocean Hotel.
Our hotels have access to the great beaches but this is also a country to explore. Take a boat trip on the mango-clad tributaries of the River Gambia, get out in the community and visit a local school, or even take a day trip into the splendour of Senegal.
We’ve each been to The Gambia at least twice, and we feel we know the country better than anyone. We pride ourselves on our expert, personal knowledge both of the country and the accommodation available.

You might think of The Gambia as a cheap winter sun destination on the west coast of Africa. And you’d be at least half right. In fact it’s so much more than that, with superb beaches, charming hotels, friendly people and stunning wildlife – and only six hours flying time from the UK. Best time to visit is November to June.
