William Gray, Editor

William is one of the UK’s leading travel writers and authors and a regular contributor to the Sunday Times Travel and Wanderlust magazines, plus other publications. He was voted Travel Writer of the Year in 2002.

After leaving Durham University with a zoology degree, William worked as a volunteer on Heron Island, a coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef. It was there that he had the idea for his first book, Coral Reefs & Islands – The Natural History of a Threatened Paradise, published in 1993 and commended in the Conservation Book Prize.

William went on to become a prolific wildlife and adventure travel writer, then with the arrival of the twins, Joe and Ellie, turned to family travel writing. His family travel guide books include the award-winning Travel with Kids – the definitive guide to family holidays worldwide. In 2009, William scooped both Travel Photographer of the Year and runner-up Travel Writer of the Year at the British Guild of Travel Writers’ Awards. The following year he was voted 4th in the Press Gazette’s Top 50 Travel Journalists.

William’s favourite destinations include South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, Cornwall and Iceland and he enjoys sea kayaking, cycling and walking Holly, the family Labrador.

Sally Gray, Editor

Sally met William at Durham University where she was studying English. Married in 1994, they spent their honeymoon backpacking across Borneo before trekking for five weeks to Everest Base Camp and back. A qualified teacher and experienced educational editor, Sally has written over ten teachers’ resources books and edited many books and magazines for Scholastic.

She is currently editor of Msafiri, the inflight magazine for Kenya Airways and works with William on family travel assignments. Sally’s favourite family destinations are Cornwall, Kenya and Australia. She enjoys cooking, swimming, yoga and walks in the Cotswold countryside near home.

Joe and Ellie Gray, Junior Writers

Shortly after they were born in 2000, twins Joe and Ellie Gray had joined their parents on numerous travel assignments for magazines, newspapers and the BBC’s Holiday programme.

In those early years they totted up several hundred hours’ flying time, investigated the electrical hazards of countless hotel rooms, destroyed the ambience of numerous restaurants, threw up in six different car seats, trekked through the Atlas Mountains, kayaked in New Zealand, made fire with Bushmen in Namibia, island-hopped though the Seychelles and sampled Disney on three different continents.

Ellie and Joe also write for 101 Family Holidays. Read Ellie’s favourite holidays, and Joe’s favourite holidays.

About 101 Holidays

Launched in January 2009, 101 Holidays is the UK’s leading independent travel inspiration website. It was founded by Sunday Times travel writers Mark Hodson and David Wickers, along with director Catherine Leech.

Since then, we have picked up a number of awards and been named by The Times as one of the year’s 10 Hot Websites. The Independent said we were the 18th best travel website. We have since launched a series of sister sites: 101 Short breaks, 101 Honeymoons and now 101 Family Holidays. Although travel companies are charged a fee to appear on the site, each has been individually selected by our editors for its expertise and excellence.
