Meet our editor, Mark Frary
Mark is a regular contributor to national newspapers, magazines and websites on travel. He has held a number of roles including The Sunday Times travel agony uncle and ski correspondent and business travel editor at The Times.
He writes for Huffington Post and his own family travel blog Travelling with the Kids and has circumnavigated the globe several times with the family in hot pursuit. Mark has won a number of awards for his travel writing.
Mark took an unusual route into travel writing. He graduated from University College London in astronomy and physics and went on to smash particles together at the CERN nuclear physics laboratory in Geneva. He subsequently became a technical editor before moving into writing for the mainstream press.
He has written eight books, including Aiming High, a biography of package travel pioneer Erna Low as well as the popular science books How to Get a Sofa Around A Corner and Freaky Future. He also speaks at conferences on travel, social media and technology.
Western Australia, the Alps, the Isles of Scilly, and his native Norfolk are the destinations most likely to get him excited but the experience of arriving in a new city or country is always a pleasure.
Mark lives with his wife Clare and three children in Bedfordshire and appears on BBC Three Counties radio every month, sharing travel tips and answering listeners’ problems. He loves festivals and is part of a team of volunteers who organise the successful Ampthill Festival of music and arts.
About 101 Holidays
Launched in January 2009, 101 Holidays is the UK’s leading independent travel inspiration website. It was founded by Sunday Times travel writers Mark Hodson and David Wickers, along with director Catherine Leech.
Since then, we have picked up a number of awards and been named by The Independent as the 18th best travel website. We have since launched a series of sister sites: 101 Short Breaks, 101 Honeymoons, 101 Singles Holidays and 101 USA Holidays, along with 101 Family Holidays. Although travel companies are charged a fee to appear on the site, each has been individually selected by our editors for its expertise and excellence.
