101 Short Breaks

South Africa self-drive

Will and Sally's verdict

One of our all-time favourite destinations. We took the children to South Africa when they were just five, and they loved it. Boredom is simply not an option – not in a country where, in one day, you can stand on top of Table Mountain, paddle with wild penguins and then tuck into good ol’ fish and chips.

W&O Rainbow Tours says

Our 13-night self-drive tour of Cape Town and the Garden Route, topped off by a thrilling safari in the Eastern Cape, has been planned with families in mind. What’s more, there’s no need for any precautions against malaria and no jet lag.

The hotels and lodges welcome children and go out of their way to make your holiday special, with everything from animal petting and pony-trekking to exhilarating activities like whale watching and elephant interaction.

Your holiday starts in Cape Town – explore the city, take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, see the penguins at Boulder’s Beach and visit Robben Island. The Cape Grace, your waterfront base for four nights, welcomes children and offers one-, two- and three-bedroom suites.

Next stop is Grootbos Nature Reserve, where activities include pony rides, shell-seeking on the beach and, for older children, boat trips to Dyer Island to see African Penguins, Cape Fur Seals and, with any luck, whales. This magical lodge is widely acclaimed for its conservation initiatives.

You’ll travel on to De Zeekoe for a night, where the highlight is a visit to see the meerkats at play, before spending three nights at Hog Hollow Country Lodge. Child friendly menus, story-telling, milk and gingerbread men at bedtime all contribute to the homely feel, while the nearby beach is a great viewing point for dolphin and whales.

Finally, you’ll head to the Amakhala Game Reserve for your final four nights, staying at Leeuwenbosch. There are dedicated game drives for the younger children – and a good chance of seeing cheetah and other Big Five game.
