Has the BBC2 documentary On Thin Ice inspired you to visit the Antarctic? Watching James Cracknell, Ben Fogle and Ed Coats trudge across the polar icecap as they attempt to win the 2009 Amundsen Omega3 Race to the South Pole is classic armchair viewing.

But if you want to experience those dramatic landscapes without the frostbite and the frozen beards, Hurtigruten is offering a more comfortable alternative: sailing on board its polar expedition ship, MS Fram, you can choose from 9-day and 17-day voyages departing in November and December 2009.

There are on-board talks from experts on Antarctica, and Polar Circle boats to take passengers ashore for a closer look at the penguin colonies, ice formations and sheer spectacle of miles of ice and snow.

Book before August 31 and save £670 pp on the shorter Antarctic Discovery voyage; departing November 18 and 26 and December 4 and 12, this 8-night trip now costs £2,681 pp full board. Departing November 1 and December 20, the 16-night Shackleton’s Antarctica voyage, which also takes in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, costs £3,529 pp, a saving of £822 pp.

Flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia are included in the price; flights between the UK and Buenos Aires are not included and cost approximately £1,275 pp.
