Has the BBC2 documentary On Thin Ice inspired you to visit the Antarctic? Watching James Cracknell, Ben Fogle and Ed Coats trudge across the polar icecap as they attempt to win the 2009 Amundsen Omega3 Race to the South Pole is classic armchair viewing.

But if you want to experience those dramatic landscapes without the frostbite and the frozen beards, Hurtigruten is offering a more comfortable alternative: sailing on board its polar expedition ship, MS Fram, you can choose from 9-day and 17-day voyages departing in November and December 2009.

There are on-board talks from experts on Antarctica, and Polar Circle boats to take passengers ashore for a closer look at the penguin colonies, ice formations and sheer spectacle of miles of ice and snow.

Book before August 31 and save £670 pp on the shorter Antarctic Discovery voyage; departing November 18 and 26 and December 4 and 12, this 8-night trip now costs £2,681 pp full board. Departing November 1 and December 20, the 16-night Shackleton’s Antarctica voyage, which also takes in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, costs £3,529 pp, a saving of £822 pp.

Flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia are included in the price; flights between the UK and Buenos Aires are not included and cost approximately £1,275 pp.

By 101 Holidays newsdesk

Departing on September 24, Hurtigruten is offering a unique voyage from Copenhagen to Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland and New York in the company of one of the world’s leading experts in Viking history.

Back in the ‘60s, the young Benedicte Ingstad accompanied her explorer parents, Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine, on the expedition to Newfoundland when they discovered the ‘Vinland settlement’ of the noted Norseman, Leif Eriksson, from circa AD 1000. Believed to be the only known Norse settlement in North America, it is generally acknowledged as proof that North America was discovered and inhabited by Europeans 500 years before Christopher Columbus landed on its shores.

Now a Professor in Medical Anthropology at the University of Oslo, on-board lecturer Benedicte Ingstad will share with passengers her personal experiences, unique knowledge, films and images of the original excavations, Viking history and Greenland’s culture and traditions.

The 16-day cruise takes in no fewer than 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (l’Anse aux Meadows, Red Bay and Gros Morne National Park) and finishes with a night in New York. It costs from £6,175 pp full-board; flights from London to Copenhagen and back from New York plus one night in New York cost an additional £850 pp.

Find out more about the In the Wake of the Vikings cruise. For those interested in Greenland with less time (and money) to spare, Hurtigruten is currently offering 2 for the price of 1 on selected July and September departures on its 8-day Glaciers & Icebergs of Greenland cruise.

By 101 Holidays newsdesk

Hurtigruten is offering two cruises for the price of one on its 8-night Glaciers and Icebergs itinerary in Greenland, saving up to £2,300.

Hugging Greenland’s western coastline and travelling north of the Arctic Circle, the cruise on MS Fram offers close encounters with Greenland’s unique wildlife, icebergs and glaciers.

There are expert lecturers on board and a unique range of optional on-shore activities such as a visit to an old whaling station, a barbecue on the Eqip Sermia Glacier and a guided hike to Sermermiut, the UNESCO World Heritage Site believed to trace back to the Inuit people 3,500 years ago.

The offer is available on departures leaving Copenhagen on June 11, July 2, 9 and 30, and September 17 2009. The reduced price, from £1,620 to £2,300pp (depending on cabin type and departure date), includes 7 nights full-board in a shared cabin, return flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and transfers. Flights from the UK to Copenhagen (£240pp) are not included.

You must book by May 31. More information on the Glaciers and Icebergs cruise deal.
