Amalfi Coast

Mark and David's verdict:

The dramatic scenery of the Amalfi coast, with its lemon groves, almond trees and bougainvillea, is stunning. You'll find resorts for all tastes, from popular Sorrento – an ideal hub for boat trips to Capri and Ischia, and outings to Pompeii and Vesuvius – to super-chic Positano and the exquisite hilltop retreat of Ravello.

Few places in the world can surpass the spectacular beauty, drama and allure of the Amalfi Coast. With elegant hotels, pretty towns and some of Italy’s best cuisine, it’s not surprising that this region of Italy is so desirable and popular.

Overlooking the Bay of Naples is Sorrento, a bustling tourist destination which is home to the Grand Hotel Cocumella. This former monastery combines glamour and elegance, set within vast landscaped gardens.

Positano is perhaps the most charming of the resorts set along the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula. The Hotel Poseidon offers stunning views from the restaurant and panoramic terrace along with charming and elegant surroundings.

Further east is the town of Amalfi, where the Hotel Santa Caterina’s cliff-top position allows you to enjoy breathtaking views from your private terrace or from the hotel’s beach.

Set further back from the coast is the peaceful resort of Ravello. Occupying spectacular locations in the heart of the town are Hotel Caruso and the neighbouring Palazzo Avino, both 12th century palaces which have been impeccably restored and ooze character.

A short journey by hydrofoil from the mainland is the island of Capri. Hotel Luna is an understated and comfortable property which overlooks the famous Faraglioni rocks, whilst Casa Morgano is set within peaceful gardens and offers accommodation with terraces and sea views.

The larger island of Ischia lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, with Mezzatorre Resort & Spa providing a luxurious yet low-key escape for those who wish to relax in an isolated setting.

For a unique experience, take in the stunning scenery of Europe by travelling to the Amalfi Coast by train, or discover the flora and fauna of the region with a garden tour holiday.
